How do Search Engines Work?A Search Engine is simply an enormous directory or index of web pages. The major search engines (Yahoo!, Google, etc.) automatically scour the Internet, constantly looking for new and updated web pages. We call them "search engines" not so much for their constant searching, but more for the fact that we humans can search them for web pages that relate to a specific topic. Most Internet users now rely heavily on search engines to find what they are looking for. Unfortunately, a search for a simple term like "oil painting" will return millions of related entries, all web pages that contain those words. So, getting your website found on the search engines is a challenge. Websites4artists.net improves your chances of being found on the search engines by editing your text to include as many searchable terms as possible, and by imbedding descriptions and keywords into your graphics and other unseen web page code. Search engines rely entirely on text, so optimizing the words on your web pages is very important. Equally important are links to and from your website. A well-linked website is assumed to be more useful by the search engines, so they will tend to offer it closer to the top of a seach result list. We also make sure to link your website to other useful resources - for instance, if you participate in an art show that has a website, we can link your show calendar to it. Sadly, there are no "magic" methods to get your website in the top spot on a particular search engine - so don't believe any offers to do so. Providing an interesting and informative website is the best way to improve your search engine rankings.
